Just a little update to one of my more popular plugins, BNS Featured Category. The changes happen mostly under the page aside from a bit of JavaScript and some more intuitive adjustments to the options panel.

A new version version of the BNS Featured Category plugin was released today. There were several changes and additions as well as a few extra bits of goodness.

The plugin is compatible with WordPress 3.3 (specifically tested up to beta3-19254 as of this writing) and now supports internationalization (i18n). End-users can now add their own custom stylesheet for the plugin as well. The full details can be read in the changelog.

May 2011 Updates

It seems I have been on a bit of a tear with updating recently. Although nothing very dramatic, all of the recent (and upcoming) updates are still useful; and, I suggest keeping up-to-date at your earliest convenience.

The first updates are for two long-standing plugins: BNS Featured Category; and, BNS Featured Tag. Versions 1.8.5 and 1.8.4 respectively are now readily available from the WordPress Extend Plugin repository. As both plugins are very similar, the updates to each are almost identical in nature. That being the case, I will just list the common changelog details. Please feel free to read the specifics after you update.

- confirmed compatible with WordPress version 3.2
- addressed some minor items in the readme
- cleaned up some text strings in the code
- minor variable changes
- `load_*_widget()`, `*_first_words()`

Next on the updates list is my long time favorite Theme, Desk Mess Mirrored. Again, minor updates, especially since this is what I would call a mature theme. Most of the changes and modifications were directed at adding additional aesthetics via CSS, or at least allowing end-users to be able to further style elements of the Theme. Here is the changelog of recently go “live” version 1.8.5:

BNS Featured Category 1.8.4.1

I recently updated the BNS Featured Category plugin to version 1.8.4 adding an interesting new option to show posts from the same category of the post being shown using the ‘single’ view template.

Unfortunately, while working from my laptop and using Filezilla in its default configuration, an over-sight on my part lead to an error in my process downloading the plugin files from my test server that left extra line-feeds after every line in both the main plugin file and the ‘readme’ file.

Thank you to my readers and end-users who pointed out this issue and I have corrected the problem both in version 1.8.4 and the newer version 1.8.4.1 for those that have already updated to the former version.

If you are not able to update to version 1.8.4.1 automatically you may need to remove the 1.8.4 version manually with an FTP client then re-install the latest version 1.8.4.1

My apologies for any inconveniences this may have created.

BNS Featured Category 1.8.1

Late yesterday I uploaded the most recent updates to my free WordPress plugin BNS Featured Category. This update adds the additional functionality of post thumbnail support which has been on the TODO list and requested several times.

The update made Sept 19, 2010 to version 1.8 also included WordPress “shortcode” support. This functionality proved to be note quite ready for prime-time and I uploaded version 1.8.1 a couple of hours ago after removing the “shortcode” function code.

The working version of 1.8.2 has the shortcode function code re-introduced but I am not satisfied with its full functionality, yet so I will be holding off releasing it until further testing and reviews can be made.

The following is the latest changelog from the BNS Featured Category readme.txt file:

BNS Featured Plugins Verified on WordPress 3.0

The next two plugins on my list for compatibility review with WordPress 3.0 have been verified to work correctly. The plugins I reviewed this time are:

In the cases of these plugins there were not significant edits required to verify they will work correctly when used on WordPress 3.0 installations.

Next up will be the BNS Login and BNS SMF Feeds plugins, followed by the BNS Support plugin. I will be reviewing the BNS Facebook Sharecount plugin after all of the BNS themes have been reviewed.

BNS Featured Category 1.6

The latest version of BNS Featured Category is now available at WordPress.org as of Nov 14, 2009. The most significant change is the addition of an option to display the Category Description of the first category chosen. Here is the latest changelog, followed by a screenshot of the current options panel:

Just over a month ago, Greg made a comment on the plugin page for the free WordPress plugin BNS Featured Category. He suggested adding a word limiting option on the excerpt and it has now been implemented. Thanks, again, for the idea!

BNS Featured Category 1.1

I have made a few enhancements to the BNS Featured Category plugin. It now has an additional option of only showing Post Titles. I also added one line of inline CSS for images wider than the widget area. Version 1.1 of BNS Featured Category should be available within approximately 15 minutes at the WordPress.org Extend Plugins repository.

I would like to have posts excerpts from a single category load into my sidebar. I would love to be able to use the <--read more--> within the posts to dictate the output in the sidebar. When the read more is clicked the entire post should load into the single.php format.

… and so began another exercise in creating a plugin. This gave me an idea for some code, the code grew into a plugin, but I still wanted to get a better understanding of widgets and user options and now we have the BNS Featured Category plugin, fully widget capable and designed for multiple unique instances. The long description of the plugin reads:

Plugin with multi-widget functionality that displays most recent posts from specific category or categories (set with user options). Also includes user options to display: Author and meta details; comment totals; post categories; post tags; and either full post or excerpt (or any combination).

I have submitted an application to the WordPress Extend Plugins team for SVN space and hope to see an approval soon. The code is complete and ready to be used as of this writing.
