    • ]]>     The latest version of my Ground Floor theme for self-hosted WordPress installations went live in the Extend repository a couple of days ago.

    The “common” functions I use in my themes that were updated with the last version of Desk Mess Mirrored were also updated in this theme. Some minor code modifications were made to other functions making them more theme specific.

    The menu CSS (style) was re-written to better handle deeper structures. Please note, this may cause issues with older Child-Themes.

    The Shelter Child-Theme is now scheduled to be updated in the very near future but may not be immediately available in the WordPress Extend repository until the powers-that-be give their approval to (officially) include Child-Themes.

    Look for a future announcement regarding the release of Shelter and where to download the most current copy.

The impetus for the update came from a comment regarding a typo I made in the ‘page.php’ template file. This was also an opportunity to add full wp_nav_menu() support and finish implementing post and page featured image thumbnails. The following is from the recent changelog:

    • ]]>     A minor update was recently implemented in all of our themes; one that fixes the issue with fopen() errors in the footer. The code that causes these errors is identical in all our themes. This issue has been corrected and can be found in the following theme versions:

    The code in the footer is a check if the theme being used is a child theme. If it is a child theme: the code will display the child theme name with its version; and, the parent theme name with its version. The functions previously being used were incorrect.

    If you are experiencing errors in the footer starting with text similar to:

    Warning:file()[function.file]...

    … then these latest versions of the themes will likely correct this issue. If you are not experiencing these footer issues the update will still have its benefits as noted in the changelog posted on each theme’s individual page.

    (NB: The latest versions of Ground Floor and Pinup Meets Grunge are now live at WordPress.org as of Sep 8, 2009.)

    • ]]>     I have just uploaded the most recent version of our free WordPress theme Ground Floor for review at the WordPress Extend theme repository. Yes! It is a major jump in version numbers from our usual much smaller incremental changes … and with good reason. Here is the changelog for Ground Floor version 1.1:

    = Version 1.1 =
  - re-work of the footer widget area into three (3) defined areas
  -- removed the <table> structures
  -- added BNS-Login plugin functionality to Middle Footer Widget as default.
  - improved IE6 compatibility
  - CSS: hr element -> edited properties: 'border: 1px solid black;' and 'background: #673000;'
  - CSS (new): added BNS Plugins section at end of style.css

    The footer.php file was almost completely rewritten to remove the use of tables, which was only a stop-gap to begin with. We chose to add the full functionality of our free WordPress plugin BNS-Login version 1.2 as well into this theme.

    • ]]>     I submitted the Ground Floor theme to WordPress.org just a short while ago. I also updated the themes page with the screenshot and theme description as they are included with the package. Here they are again:
    Ground Floor
    … and the description as it appears in the stylesheet:

    Richly toned wood floor background with bare-earth colored widgetized sidebar and footer (six widget areas in total, as shown on the included widget map). A strong theme to begin with; grow into; and, build on.

    This theme offered several learning experiences ranging from: implementing threaded comments; furthering my understanding of internationalization coding; and, additional PHP coding techniques and concepts. Just like starting on the “ground floor”, this theme has given me a great sense of personal accomplishment. I hope it will be enjoyed and used by many people around the world.
