Finally!

OK, not so much for releasing this plugin but more so for sorting out the issue with this plugin throwing errors when `WP_DEBUG=true`. The issue seems to have been with the code I used from Lester Chan’s ‘WP-PluginUsed’ which I replaced with very similar code from Paul G Petty’s ‘WP List All Active Plugins’.

Aside from the above update, the rest is rather straight-forward and standard fare for recent releases. See the changelog for more details, or better yet: download and activate the plugin … and enjoy!

BNS Login 1.8

As I noted in yesterday’s post, I have updated what I consider an essential plugin: BNS Login.

Most of the updates for this plugin were in the documentation with some minor code clean-up, so I’ll just post the changelog and carry on with the next plugin to be updated.

BNS Inline Asides 0.6

As WordPress 3.3 approaches I am still working on updating and releasing my current plugins; themes will follow afterward. All of my themes and plugins are functionally compatible with the current beta release of WordPress 3.3 and I do not foresee any issues once version 3.3 is released.

All the same I am putting each plugin through my new workflow method and tools as part of the general compatibility checks.

The most recent updated plugin is one of my personal favorites: BNS Inline Asides. The biggest difference is changing from using the `blockquote` element to using a `div` block with the `bnsia` class, and dropping support for the `span` element. This is easily changed and noted with the plugin (inline) documentation. Feel free to ask for help if making the change to another supported element is needed.

The other major changes are listed in the recent changelog found in the plugin `readme.txt` file, and below.

BNS Corner Logo 1.6

As WordPress 3.3 approaches I am working through all of my plugins. Although not really in any particular order, and some plugins have more on their @todo list than others, the latest to be highlighted with it’s update is BNS Corner Logo.

The biggest change, or at least the one that is most noticeable to the end-user, is the ability to choose the Gravatar to be used based on user ID rather than only `user_ID = 1` as the default.

The rest of the major changes, although mostly “under-the-page”, are noted in the changelog.

BNS Featured Tag 1.9

Just as the new version of BNS Featured Category (BNSFC) was release today so am I releasing a new version of BNS Featured Tag (BNSFT). The plugins follow a very similar development path and are generally reviewed and updated in tandem. In this case most of the work was done in BNSFT then ported to BNSFC but I decided to finalize and release BNSFC first due to end-user requests I had received.

The updates to BNS Featured Tag are very similar to those done to BNS Featured Category, please see the changelog for additional details.

BNS Featured Category 1.9

A new version version of the BNS Featured Category plugin was released today. There were several changes and additions as well as a few extra bits of goodness.

The plugin is compatible with WordPress 3.3 (specifically tested up to beta3-19254 as of this writing) and now supports internationalization (i18n). End-users can now add their own custom stylesheet for the plugin as well. The full details can be read in the changelog.

Also to note this entire update was done using a local installation (WampServer) as the primary test environment; the PhpStorm application as the primary IDE; and GitHub for version control.

I would have to say, doing the development across three PC’s was interesting but as I described my “new” workflow previously it was actually a lot easier to adapt to than I expected.

My next release will be the NoNa theme which is being developed under the same conditions; and with a few more tests it too should be ready for the public.

Plugin: BNS Theme Add-Ins

This was an interesting week for coding. I really hadn’t planned to write a new plugin and get it released into the WordPress Extend repository, it just sort of worked out that way.

I started with the premise of putting into practice the ideas behind one of the core trac tickets I have submitted (#16395). This one deals with the Parent-Theme version and the “Template Version” a Child-Theme is created and maintained for.

The idea actually started from a post by Justin Tadlock at DevPress that follows very closely the idea I presented in the core trac ticket.

This brought about these add-ins:

`BNS Extra Theme Headers`
`BNS Child-Theme Version Control`

My involvement with the WordPress Theme Review Team and the idea of presenting the recommended documentation provided the ideas for the following items:

`BNS Readme Menu Item`
`BNS Changelog Menu Item`

This naturally led to the last Add-In function, as generally Child-Themes do not be default support internationalization:

`BNS Child-Theme TextDomain` and i18n (translation) support

… and so we have a new plugin that covers these items and does not require editing to add a `textdomain`; or menu items; or even a Child-Theme version versus Parent-Theme version test.

As I think of more “generic” functionality, or suitable suggestions, I will update this plugin; in the meantime, please use the plugin and feel free to provide any constructive feedback.

As a closing remark and a bit more back-story, this code was first written to be called with an `include` statement; then re-written to be a mu-plugin; and, finally, as a general WordPress plugin.

I suspect there will be at least some code optimizations to be made; let me know what you think … and, enjoy!

Desk Mess Mirrored 1.8.6.1

Although I have been actively working on many different projects lately I still make sure to take the time to read and respond to feedback from end-users and clients alike, especially when there is general functionality to be gained by adopting their ideas and suggestions.

Born from the idea of Rey Junco, I have updated the `bns_dynamic_copyright` function to be more easily configured in Child-Themes; and, from Andy Fragen‘s suggestion I have re-worked the theme’s ‘setup’ function to also be more easily addressed with Child-Themes.

I received the above earlier this morning; and, for my readers who also follow me on twitter, this is what I was tweeting about yesterday. The first pass to a fully functional plugin was a little under 90 minutes. Although I did spend the rest of the day, on and off, tweaking and adding additional functionality until you now have the initial release just committed to the WordPress Extend Plugins repository: BNS Twitter Follow Button.

A widget to allow you to set the parameters of the Twitter Follow Button found here: https://twitter.com/about/resources/followbutton. This widget also creates a shortcode that can be used in posts and pages.
