I’ve been looking at the general layout of the site for the last little while thinking it needs some tidying up … and yes I see the irony in using the Desk Mess Mirrored theme and wanting to tidy things up.

I will mostly be working on the theme related pages. The plan is to make that whole section of the site more easily read and cleaner to look at. I am tempted to change to one of my more minimalist themes but Desk Mess Mirrored is my first and still a favorite for many people …

I would like to thank you in advance for your patience as I do some minor renovations. Please feel free to leave comments with any ideas, too.

Don’t Gamble with Your WordPress Theme

Since June of 2010 I have been a member of the WordPress Theme Review Team (WPTRT) working with new and old Theme authors alike adding new and improved Themes to the WordPress repository.

The WPTRT makes every effort to insure the end-user will be downloading from the repository a quality Theme that meets all of the current guidelines for Theme submission. We help to reduce the potential security risks and broken functionality that have been noted in the past with some Themes.

Often end-users are gambling when they download a Theme from another website, the WPTRT offers the security to always know a new or currently released Theme found on the WordPress repository will not have end-users gambling on whether or not it will work correctly, or be safe to use.

If you want to gamble online there are many sites you can easily find to take your chances on … if poker is your thing, try here; or, if you prefer the variety of a casino, try this place.

Just remember if you want a safe Theme to use: you won’t be gambling if you choose a recently released Theme found at the WordPress Extend Themes repository; and always remember to play safe.

Also, as a follow-up to the June 2010 Updates post, I have personally seen to verifying all themes that have been recently submitted are confirmed in the review queue, each with its own Trac ticket; and, Shades would have been approved earlier but I felt I would have been in conflict approving my own theme(s).

The latest version (1.3.3) of the free WordPress theme Shades has just been uploaded for approval by the Themes Team at WordPress.org. Here is the recent changelog for this version:

Desk Mess Mirrored 20,000 Downloads

Desk Mess Mirrored is by far the most popular theme I have released to date. The theme has ranged in popularity from number 23 on Jun 15, 2009 to where it has settled into its current home on page four or five of the WordPress Extend Theme repository.

Around 6:30 PM (GMT-5) today I was able to capture this screenshot:

Children of the WordPress Repository

There is an interesting idea posted at WordPress Extend Ideas about adding child themes to the WordPress Extend Themes repository. Here is a link to the topic.

My comment (below) can be directly linked to here.

As mentioned above, the larger “framework” themes are likely to be around for a good deal of time, but what of the other themes in the repository?

I do not believe there is a theme (anywhere) that cannot be made into a “parent” theme with a child theme created from it, but who will manage these parents in the repository? and for how long? Also, must the parent reside in the repository for the child to be housed there as well?

Perhaps a second repository for child themes of specific frameworks? The framework author(s) would have to submit their theme for special approval to be included in this “new” repository … perhaps as part of premium services?!

Just some thoughts …

My vote: undecided.

As I wrote July 23, 2009 child themes can and do exist in the theme repository. Desk Mess Mirrored and Shades both contain a child theme folder in the compressed file currently available from the WordPress Extend Theme repository (see my themes here).

Will child themes be available from every theme inside (and outside of) the repository, or will they only be accepted from a select clique of “frameworks”?

Death of a Theme…I think NOT!

My husband works hard on his themes and usually the graphics as well, but this time I did the graphics for a theme…Pinup Meets Grunge. In less than 1 month (22 days to be exact), Pinup Meets Grunge was downloaded 1100 times off of the WordPress.org themes directory. Today an email comes…Pinup Meets Grunge has been suspended…why…because they received “an email complaining that the theme ran against the no adult/mature themes rule for the directory.” To me ”an email” means 1…hmmm…1 vs. 1100 downloads, that just doesn’t add up.

I’m a 50 year old mother of 2 with 1 grandchild, I like art, I especially like 40′s and 50′s Pinup art, Nose-art of the old fighter planes. I like swing and Jazz, the shoes and hairstyles of that era. So why was my theme suspended. Can we say small minds? It’s 2009…get with the plan, there was nothing wrong with my theme, Wordpress.org approved it and then less than 1 month later they said ”while it isn’t obvious and over the top adult/mature (like a theme with pornography in it), I do think it’s fairly suggestive and trying to push where the line is for adult/mature in the theme directory.” I guess they wouldn’t know art if it jumped up and bit them in the…So I guess if someone were to make a theme honoring the art of that era or the nose-art fighter planes of that era, it will not get accepted. Or how about honoring the Miss America, Miss Universe pageants? Oh and lets not even think about making a theme for the swimming competitions/synchronized swimming or even the gymnastics of the Olympic games…because the way they dress it might be adult/mature…give me a break.

Powers that be at WordPress.org answer me this? Where are the rules for the “adult/mature themes rule for the directory”. I have been all over your site, using this search word and that search word and I can’t find anything relating to the types of graphics you can use in a theme. Once again, you approved the theme and then you get 1 email and suspend it…where does the censorship or should I say favoritism end?

WordPress.org, shame on you for taking a piece of art and turning it into something dirty…shame on you!
