Don’t Gamble with Your WordPress Theme

Since June of 2010 I have been a member of the WordPress Theme Review Team (WPTRT) working with new and old Theme authors alike adding new and improved Themes to the WordPress repository.

The WPTRT makes every effort to insure the end-user will be downloading from the repository a quality Theme that meets all of the current guidelines for Theme submission. We help to reduce the potential security risks and broken functionality that have been noted in the past with some Themes.

Often end-users are gambling when they download a Theme from another website, the WPTRT offers the security to always know a new or currently released Theme found on the WordPress repository will not have end-users gambling on whether or not it will work correctly, or be safe to use.

If you want to gamble online there are many sites you can easily find to take your chances on … if poker is your thing, try here; or, if you prefer the variety of a casino, try this place.

Just remember if you want a safe Theme to use: you won’t be gambling if you choose a recently released Theme found at the WordPress Extend Themes repository; and always remember to play safe.

Multi Downloaded 600 Times

I just noticed earlier today my child-theme Multi of the Desk Mess Mirrored theme has been downloaded 600 times!

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to the WordPress Download Monitor, its usefulness allows me to easily provide this link to the current version (1.4.5) which also displays a downloads counter: Multi (2452)

I do have plans to update this child-theme to more current standards; and, match the version number of its parent theme, Desk Mess Mirrored. I will also be working towards being able to submit this child-theme, as well as allowing other theme authors to submit child-themes, to the WordPress Extend Themes repository within my capacity as a member of the WordPress Theme Review Team.

Although I will continue to maintain Multi here so it remains available, once WordPress.org opens the theme repository (hopefully to all themes as parents) and Multi meets all the review criteria it will reside there as its primary download source.

June 2010 Updates

Obviously there is a great deal of activity in the WordPress community with the release of version 3.0.

Theme designers and plugin developers have been very busy updating and improving their respective works, myself included. I made updates to a few of the BNS series of plugins … WP_DEBUG is your friend! Although I still have a small issue with a plugin I am currently reviewing. The plugin code works as it is expected to, but therein lies its issue. At this time it is of little significance, but I will likely need to rewrite a large part of the code to eliminate this last little issue.

Also, currently the Desk Mess Mirrored and Shades themes are in the theme review queue, which itself is undergoing some potentially significant changes.

Recently, Ian Stewart wrote a tweet calling out to individuals interested in helping out with the theme review process. Interestingly I was the first to respond. There are actually several qualified individuals that are now helping Joseph Scott sort through and review new and existing themes. This process unfortunately has added a noticeable delay in the process but the expectation is it will only be a temporary as the theme review process moves into the hands of more than one or two individuals; and, these new reviewers catch up on the learning curve.

I look at this as yet another way to contribute back to the community and so do several of the other theme reviewers. This is a work in progress and I look for it to be one of constant improvement as well; and, it has given me a whole new insight into the theme review process. It is a lot more involved than you would first imagine.

WordPress 3.0 BNS Plugin Updates

WordPress 3.0 is now officially in beta … beta1, but its still beta! That means the beginning of the final review and release of my BNS series of plugins. The first two, in no particular order (actually they were alphabetically first on my list) that have been tested compatible with WordPress 3.0 and released to the WordPress.org Plugins repository are:

Simply follow the plugin links to see the latest changelog for each plugin; and, remember to check back to see the release announcements of the rest of the BNS series of plugins.

Following the plugin updates will be the update releases of our themes.

NB: A minor issue in the BNS Corner Logo plugin using non-Gravatar images has been discovered and a temporary fix (version 1.3.1) will be going into the WordPress.org Plugin repository within the hour. EAC.

Shades 1.3.3

The latest version (1.3.3) of the free WordPress theme Shades has just been uploaded for approval by the Themes Team at WordPress.org. Here is the recent changelog for this version:

Desk Mess Mirrored is by far the most popular theme I have released to date. The theme has ranged in popularity from number 23 on Jun 15, 2009 to where it has settled into its current home on page four or five of the WordPress Extend Theme repository.

Around 6:30 PM (GMT-5) today I was able to capture this screenshot:

Death of a Theme…I think NOT!

My husband works hard on his themes and usually the graphics as well, but this time I did the graphics for a theme…Pinup Meets Grunge. In less than 1 month (22 days to be exact), Pinup Meets Grunge was downloaded 1100 times off of the WordPress.org themes directory. Today an email comes…Pinup Meets Grunge has been suspended…why…because they received “an email complaining that the theme ran against the no adult/mature themes rule for the directory.” To me ”an email” means 1…hmmm…1 vs. 1100 downloads, that just doesn’t add up.

I’m a 50 year old mother of 2 with 1 grandchild, I like art, I especially like 40′s and 50′s Pinup art, Nose-art of the old fighter planes. I like swing and Jazz, the shoes and hairstyles of that era. So why was my theme suspended. Can we say small minds? It’s 2009…get with the plan, there was nothing wrong with my theme, Wordpress.org approved it and then less than 1 month later they said ”while it isn’t obvious and over the top adult/mature (like a theme with pornography in it), I do think it’s fairly suggestive and trying to push where the line is for adult/mature in the theme directory.” I guess they wouldn’t know art if it jumped up and bit them in the…So I guess if someone were to make a theme honoring the art of that era or the nose-art fighter planes of that era, it will not get accepted. Or how about honoring the Miss America, Miss Universe pageants? Oh and lets not even think about making a theme for the swimming competitions/synchronized swimming or even the gymnastics of the Olympic games…because the way they dress it might be adult/mature…give me a break.

Powers that be at WordPress.org answer me this? Where are the rules for the “adult/mature themes rule for the directory”. I have been all over your site, using this search word and that search word and I can’t find anything relating to the types of graphics you can use in a theme. Once again, you approved the theme and then you get 1 email and suspend it…where does the censorship or should I say favoritism end?

WordPress.org, shame on you for taking a piece of art and turning it into something dirty…shame on you!
