Although Desk Mess Mirrored is still one of my favorite works, I sometimes find myself at a bit of a creative loss when updating the theme. I review the entire theme to insure there are no deprecated function calls being made but I find I am running out of new feature ideas to add that “work” with the theme as it is now. Please note, the idea of three columns is not one I will be considering, in my opinion the third column would make the theme into something altogether different and in so doing take away from what makes Desk Mess Mirrored the great theme that it is.
This being the case I would like to open this post up for my readers and those great people who use the Desk Mess Mirrored theme to make suggestions and recommendations to be considered for future releases.
Since I use the theme myself, as I would imagine is quite obvious, and it has most everything I could ask of it; the question is: what would you ask of it?

Hi,
I just started to use Desk Mess Mirrored theme on a new side. And I have some “feature requests” and related Questions:
– I found errors in the german translation (missing spaces, and wrong words) – How can we fix this?
– I want the “Home” post-it (top navigation bar) to be visible all the time (like all other post-its)
– I would like to display the comments for a blog post under the post on the “home” page.
Thanks,
Rainer
@Rainer – Thanks for choosing the Desk Mess Mirrored theme. Let me address your items:
– There is a new German translation that will be included with the next update.
– I would suggest using a custom menu to achieve having the “Home” tab on every page.
– Adding the comments under the post on the “home” page similar to the single post view is an interesting idea …
@Edward – Thanks for the reply:
– A new German translation would be great – thanks.
– I only found a way to put a custom menu in the side bar, but I would like to have the top navigation bar (with the yellow post-its) as constant as possible: Thus the “home” would always be at the top left location.
– I would really appreciate to have the comments under the post on the “home” page similar to the single post view
Regards,
Rainer
@Rainer – Look under Appearance > Menu. Just remember to set the “Top Menu” to the menu you created as your custom menu. Use the “Custom Links” section to add a URL labeled as Home to the menu.
For the comments, aside from a unique customization for your installation (to add to your other edits) I do not understand what you are referring to with “similar to the single post view”.
I’m trying to ad facebook share link on the page but can’t figure it out yet. Any ideas how to do that?
Thanks
Teuta
@Teuta – I would definitely need more information before I could make any suggestions … is this a plugin, code from Facebook, or some other method?
I’m trying to put the Facebook link as button that says share or follow me on Facebook. Like many websites they have, follow me on Facebook, or share etc.
Here’s an example: http://outerbanksvoice.com
Thanks,
Teuta
@Teuta – You can likely accomplish something like that with a plugin from the WordPress Extend repository; just search on Facebook. This would not be a feature I would add to a theme by default as plugins are much better designed to handle this optional feature.
Just wanted to say I really like your theme. I have spent ages looking for something that was not only well done, but was still being updated to keep up with new features and fixes. I am sure you don’t get near positive the feedback you should so I wanted to post and say thank you for your time and effort!
Take care~
Adam
@Adam – Thank you for your time and compliments, both are greatly appreciated.
I’ve just started setting up a new site and am using your cool theme here. It’s nice to find one that gets updated regularly!
A few things I’d like to see or know how to do:
* as has been mentioned, it’s annoying to have that “Home” menu item not show up on the Home page, but show up on every other page. Other themes don’t do that, so it would seem to be theme-dependent. Why is a custom menu needed? (I’ve got a static page set up as my Home page.)
* I don’t want to enable HTML tags in comments, and would like to hide the verbiage that shows up below the comment box: “You may use these HTML tags and attributes: …” I looked at the theme files (in the editor) and can’t see the verbiage below. So I’m not sure where it’s coming from.
* How about allowing widgets to be placed in the footer?
-David
@WPChamp – Thanks for the compliments!
The “home” menu is simply part of the design concept, which is why do you need a link to the home page when you are on the home page? With the advent of custom menus and their implementation, this issue is mostly moot as it is generally more effective to create you own menu rather than be tied to a standard default page listing.
HTML tags (safe ones as listed) are enabled by default, you can “hide” the attributes by modifying the comment_form() code in comments.php – see this codex page for more details: http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/comment_form
Footer widgets is an idea … I’ve implemented them in other themes. I will consider them for Desk Mess Mirrored. Thanks for the idea.
i love the theme…been using it since july last year if im not mistaken…one additional feature that i would appreciate is
1) having the page numbers at the bottom of the entry… like google style.. .1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 etc….
@pilotHans – Interesting design idea to add direct page references to past posts; something to consider.
one more feature, is it possible from the menu above , to have a drop down to its categories…do guide me if the option is possible…
@pilotHans – Try reading this article on how to extend the WordPress Menu: http://wpfirstaid.com/2010/10/extend-the-wordpress-menu/ … this method does require you to edit the Theme so please remember to make a backup.
Can you make a version for mobile?
@Mihai – I hadn’t considered a “mobile” version of the theme but it is definitely a good idea. In the meantime, I would suggest the WP-Touch plugin as an alternative for your mobile readers.
The Meta widget shows “Login” whether you’re logged-in or not. On most themes it shows “Login” if you’re not logged-in and “Site Admin” or something like that if you ARE logged-in.
@WPChamp – I’m not seeing what you are describing. The default theme uses the standard WordPress wp_loginout() function and it is working correctly and displaying as expected on all of my test sites.
how i add link like you?
i wanna make like your “plugins” category or 5 minutes fix.
@yamasha – Those links in the top menu are create from pages with the same title. In most cases this is an automated function, simply create a new “page” for your site and it should appear in the menu.
Just thought of an idea for Desk Mess Mirrored (selfishly, for a project that I’ve been thinking of): A proper “vintage” version, without the iPod/iPhone.
I know I could modify the theme, but it might be fun to have an official Desk Mess Vintage, with obvious 1970’s or 1980’s items. Maybe cash in on the popularity of Mad Men? Just a thought!
@Craig – That sounds like a great idea for a Child-Theme, similar to the way Multi (visually) changes the coffee cup graphic … and it does lend itself to the idea of a series of related Themes, too. Thanks!
Hi!
I really like this theme.
I’m using it on my blog.
Would it be possible to add a setting to this theme, so that the “Home”-page only displays small parts of the latest posts, such as summaries?
Thank You!
Kai
@Kai – Thank you! It’s always nice to read someone enjoys the Desk Mess Mirrored theme and it is especially nice when they take time to leave a comment.
The first thing that comes to mind for what you are suggesting is the inclusion of a ‘home.php’ template file with the theme. Then, using a copy of index.php template file as its basis, change ‘the_content()’ to ‘the_excerpt()’.
Edward,
Just wanted to say I still love DMM and haven’t found anything better. Again, thanks for all your help along the way.
Andy
@Andy – Thanks! I really do appreciate the support you have for Desk Mess Mirrored and your version of the Multi Child-Theme.
